Hi - it’s Karen Knowler, The Raw Food Coach, and I’m very excited to be writing to you today with details of my first ever raw food weight-loss program.
After struggling with weight myself for most of my life and then going raw and losing all of the excess at age 20, I was whooping and cheering as I finally got the body that I wanted and honestly thought I had it well and truly sussed! However it was not so long before I made the surprising discovery that going raw in and of itself is not always enough! (I actually weighed the most I have ever weighed on a 100% raw food diet, and also the least – there was a 40lb difference! – Eek!)
Naturally, this discovery flew in the face of common raw food teachings and wisdom – what on earth could I be doing wrong?
It actually took me a few years to figure that one out, and it’s what I discovered along the way about food, power, sexuality, spirituality, energy, beliefs, self-care and more that gave me all the pieces of the jigsaw that I needed to be able to find a way of being inside me that would allow me to release the weight (well, fat) and create the body I am so happy and inspired by today.
Trust me, I never thought I’d be able to think that, let alone say it publically, but I know the pain that comes with hating what you see in the mirror. I know the frustration of thinking that nothing you wear looks good on you and of not wanting to even leave the house. I know how “guilty” we can feel to be focussing on our weight and food issues when there are so many other things we could or should be doing or worrying about, and yet, when we don’t feel good about ourselves, then we don’t feel good about very much at all – and life can become pretty miserable and everybody suffers.
Does any of this sound familiar?
- You have tried every fad diet going. They work at the time but as soon as you go back to eating “normally” the weight always comes back...
- You have eaten raw in the past or are on a raw food diet at the moment but instead of losing weight you have actually gained it.
- You have become some frustrated with food and your body that you wonder if any way of eating, ever, is going to work for you – raw or otherwise.
- You think about how much time and energy you’ve spent worrying about what you eat and how you look and it makes you want to cry that after all this time you still haven’t figured it out...
- Every year you promise yourself this will be THE year but then it never seems to happen...
When I discovered that weight loss was about so much more than food (although food absolutely has a huge part to play) I finally felt like I was “playing with a full deck”. For so long I had felt like diet books had just a tiny part of the puzzle and “shoulding” and “should-notting” on myself only served to make me more of a slave to rules (usually someone else’s), to deprivation and, quite frankly, to a deep, and almost constant sadness that coloured and burdened most of my thoughts, feelings and, to a large degree, my entire life.
Isn’t it amazing how much food can make or break our lives?
It really is incredible.

This was me aged 18 with my father at my 18th birthday meal.
As you can see I was a little bit, er, “chunky”. This dress was about the only thing I felt good in at the time because it skimmed the bits I didn’t want anyone to see and made me feel somewhat pretty for once in my life. Despite all that, I hated the fact that it was two sizes bigger than I wanted to be, and hated the “not insignificant” amount of cellulite that it was covering up, but it got me by for my big night out. Little did I know it then, but it was shortly after this photo was taken that I was to hit rock bottom with the way I felt about myself and my body. In fact, on that fateful day in 1990, aged just 18½ I found myself literally sobbing with sadness, pain and frustration as I scrutinised my, by-then, even heavier naked body in the bathroom mirror and literally prayed for a solution – specifically, one that worked.
I really wish I had more photos to share with you to show just how chunky I got, but honestly, I hated those photos so much that I threw them away – I had no clue that one day I would be wishing for them to come back again so I could share them with you!
In fact, between the age of 14 and 19 I spent most of my time positively hating my body, avoiding looking at photos of myself and trying to figure out “how to be slim”. Of course I read all the books and tried various diets, but deep down I knew that on some level or another they were fundamentally lacking. Quite where they were lacking I was still not sure; I had no idea that one day it would all fall in to place so simply and comprehensively (and in a way I just didn’t expect), let alone that the pieces of the puzzle wouldn’t just give me what I wanted most but also take me on a truly extraordinary and incredibly wonderfully personal journey as well.
Fast forward to today and at 37 years old I genuinely have a body that I love! This photo is of me taken a year ago aged 36 – exactly twice the age of the earlier photo – who would believe it? It is not uncommon these days for people to guess my age at somewhere around 25 – I even got asked for ID a couple of years ago! Today, I wear smaller jeans than I wore at 18 (by 3 sizes in fact!), I know exactly what foods suit my body best (and they make me look my best too – plus I LOVE to eat them!), and apart from having tons of energy and feeling confident in myself beyond what I had ever even dared hope for, I am happy, healthy and have a great relationship with food and my body that I never thought possible. In short, I feel really REALLY good!
Now, of course getting to this place was not a five minute journey, nor was it necessarily easy or without some growing pains (internal rather than external, thank goodness!) BUT, what I got out the other side is something that has kept me slim and healthy for over a decade and has me loving and trusting my body and myself – a very far cry from my former life as a burger and fries addict!But I think what I love most about all of this really, is that I am safe in the knowledge that I have a way of being with my body now that will serve me and keep me slim and healthy for the rest of my life. How cool is that? I don’t honestly know what more I could wish for.
And even though I initially got results very quickly on raw, it’s taken me MANY years to really figure out the inner workings and subtleties of the weight loss journey. If it was all about the food, then diets would just work. And I know that you are so done with diets it’s not even funny, but has raw food on its own taken care of the weight loss or are you still finding yourself struggling with bingeing, comfort eating, “straying” or backsliding from “the path”?

As frustrating as it may sound, I really want you to trust in the “not knowing” and also, hopefully, trust in me and that I am going to give you exactly what you need to get where you want to go.
You see, I know that if I lay it all out right here and now there’s a good chance that you will try and second-guess all of the exercises and assignments that I’m going to give you and get into all kinds of mind games that might actually NOT help you!
The thing is, there’s no way you can know what I have planned for you... because I’ve never shared all of my weight-loss work and resources in one place before. Sure, I’ve shared bits and pieces with different coaching clients over the years, but this is the first time I’m sharing my “whole-person system” with anyone... and because weight-loss is such a sensitive and complex topic and because this isn’t an approach you’ll find in any book or magazine (we’re going deeeep – are you ready?), there’s going to be some things that I share with you and that we discuss within the program that I’d rather you discover as we go.
And you will know if this “not knowing everything in advance” feels okay to you or not. Of course I’m really hoping that you’ll see the wisdom and magic in it, because there will be plenty of that I can assure you! Sometimes it is better to trust the process than to try and predict, steer or project around it. None of us know what your journey is really going to be about yet, so I’d love you to be open to the unexpected that is bound to happen here.

On Wednesday 13th January 2010, the first date in our program diary, I’ll be running this special welcome call to talk you through the program, what to expect and the philosophy that I’m encouraging you to move forward with. There’ll also be plenty of time for introductions and sharing, initial questions if you have any remaining and I’ll wrap up this “preview call” with your first piece of “homeplay” – an assignment that will create the inspired foundations for all of the work that we do together. |

6 weekly curriculum-based calls (live calls to a US bridge line). Every Wednesday for 6 consecutive weeks starting Wednesday 20th January 2010, I’ll be walking you through one topic, step-by-step. I’ll be in teaching mode for the first 30-40 minutes of the call, then I’ll open up the line for Q&A and live interactive coaching so you can have your questions answered in real-time by me for the next 30-45 minutes, therefore each call will last 75 minutes. The Q&A/coaching portion always brings up additional valuable information that will be of benefit to all participants, plus, of course, I want to make sure that you’re getting the support that you need and that your questions or challenges are being addressed. Should your question not be answered due to time constraints then I will make a point of doing it on our private members-only group forum. Your questions *will* be answered.

Every Wednesday morning I’ll upload your weekly assignment and anything else you need to the password protected forum so that you'll have time to look them over before our call.
